Single-Trip Emissions Calculator

How much CO2 will you generate the next time you drive your car?

(To calculate yearly totals for a recurring trip, click this link to go to the annual calculator)

This page is the same as our annual green savings calculator, but it has been modified to show the environmental impact of a single one-way car trip.

You can also use this calculator as an easy way to figure out your total fuel consumption and CO2 emissions over a period of time — for example, if your car has 80,000 miles on it, enter 80000 as the distance of your trip to calculate the total emissions over the lifetime of the car. Don't use commas.

How many miles do you plan on driving? miles
What is the average MPG for your car or truck? mpg
What is the average price of a gallon of gas in your city? $/per gallon

The environmental impact of your trip:
You'll burn this many gallons of gasoline:   gallons
Which translates into this many barrels of oil:   barrels1
This many pounds of greenhouse gases will be released:   pounds2
Which is as much CO2 as this many trees consume in a year:   trees3
You will spend this much on gasoline:

1Based on the Energy Information Administration's published estimate of 19.6 gallons of finished gasoline, plus byproducts, per barrel of oil refined.
2Based on U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's published figure of 8.8kg carbon dioxide produced per gallon of gasoline.
3Based on estimated 330 pounds of carbon dioxide consumed per tree annually by the USDA Forest Service Center for Urban Forest Research.
